ACA Level II Kayak Assessment
What to Expect
The ACA Level 2 Kayak Touring Skills Assessment is an opportunity to demonstrate your proficiency in the core skills required for safe and efficient kayak touring on flatwater. This is an assessment, not an instructional course, and is intended for paddlers who already have experience and are prepared to show their skills to an ACA-certified instructor.
The assessment covers essential elements of kayak control, paddle strokes, maneuvering, safety practices, and decision-making in calm, protected water. Participants will be asked to demonstrate skills such as efficient forward paddling, turning and maneuvering, stopping, basic edging, and self-rescue techniques appropriate to Level 2 standards. The tone of the assessment is supportive, professional, and focused on clear demonstration rather than speed or performance under pressure.
Assessment Focus Areas
- Efficient and controlled forward paddling technique.
- Stopping, turning, and maneuvering using appropriate paddle strokes.
- Boat control and balance on flatwater.
- Safe launching and landing practices.
- Self-rescue awareness and basic recovery skills.
- Understanding of kayaking safety principles for protected water environments.
Who This Assessment Is For
This assessment is ideal for paddlers who regularly kayak on lakes, ponds, and other protected waters and wish to formally validate their skills at the ACA Level 2 standard. It is appropriate for recreational paddlers, trip leaders, outdoor educators, and those progressing toward ACA course certifications. Participants should be comfortable paddling independently and managing their kayak without ongoing instruction.
