What to Expect

This guided fall foliage bike ride blends vibrant autumn scenery with deep local history as we travel through some of the most storied landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. Beginning in Deerfield, we cross the Connecticut River on the Canalside Rail Trail Bridge, once part of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. From here, we follow the bikeway along the historic Turners Falls canal, built in 1866, where brick mill buildings line the water and tell the story of a once-bustling industrial town.

At the Turners Falls Dam, we pause for a short walk down to the river to gain perspective on what was once the Great Falls of the Connecticut River—now held behind the 60‑foot dam that, at the time of construction, was the largest power generator east of Niagara Falls. Continuing through the heart of Turners Falls and along the shores of Barton Cove, we ride past Unity Park before climbing gently out of town and descending toward the river once again.

A highlight of the ride is our stop at Cabot Camp, where we take in sweeping views at the confluence of the Millers and Connecticut Rivers. Once the summer retreat of Philip Cabot—visionary and financier of the Turners Falls Dam project—the site also holds layers of earlier history, including a former canal toll house and tavern serving travelers navigating around Great Falls and French King Gorge. From here, we enjoy stunning views of the French King Gorge and the French King Bridge, a three-span cantilever arch bridge completed in 1932 and widely celebrated for its elegant design.

We continue north along the river, passing through Riverside Park and riding a short stretch of gravel road before arriving at The Brewery at 4 Star Farm. This innovative working farm grows its own hops and grains, offering a fitting place to pause, sample beer, and reflect on the ride. From here, participants may choose to ride back or take advantage of the provided shuttle.
