Basket making materials
Lodge with a cozy fire and warm beverages
This immersive, hands-on workshop introduces you to traditional Northeast Woodland basket-making techniques as you create your own bark container from start to finish. Under the guidance of an experienced cultural educator, you’ll work with harvested ash bark, learn how to prepare and stitch spruce roots, and shape a durable rim using red willow. The day blends craft instruction with an appreciation for Indigenous material culture, offering both practical skill-building and cultural insight.
Ideal for adults and teens ages 15+ with an interest in traditional crafts, cultural heritage, or working with natural materials. No prior experience is necessary, though participants should have the hand strength needed for stitching bark and shaping materials.
Where: Sessions are held at Trustees’ Notchview or, seasonally, at a site in Shutesbury, Massachusetts.
Format: A full-day indoor/outdoor craft workshop with time dedicated to material preparation, stitching, shaping, and finishing.
Pace & Timing: Approximately 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., with breaks for warming up, refreshments, and lunch.
