*Rock Climbing: Advanced Anchor Building

Are you ready to take your anchor building to the next level? This advanced clinic focuses on constructing and evaluating rock climbing anchors when using artificial protection such as spring-loaded camming devices and passive gear. Participants will spend most of their time practicing placing gear, building anchors, and evaluating each other’s work. This day is valuable to anyone who is seeking knowledge in building traditional gear anchors.

Scenarios

  • Setting up top rope anchors using bolts.
  • Setting up top rope anchors using natural features such as trees or rocks.

Topics

  • Climbing ethics and LNT (Leave No Trace) principles.
  • Review of climbing knots and hitches.
  • Assessing micro and microstructure of rock.
  • Proper placement of active and passive artificial gear.
  • Constructing anchors with artificial gear.
  • Edge Safety.

Prerequisites

  • Familiarity with the following knots: Figure eight follow-through, Figure Eight on a bight, overhand on a bite, clove hitch, double fisherman’s, bowline, girth hitch, prussic, autoblock, klemheist. (WE WILL SEND THIS OUT AS HOMEWORK) – Please refer to Animated Knots.com for reference.
  • Have taken our “Intro to Rock Climbing” course or have similar outdoor climbing experience.
  • Highly recommended that you have taken our “101 anchor clinic” and or are confident in the skills described in that course.

What to Bring

  • Personal clothing appropriate for the weather. There is a fair amount of standing around, so consider bringing layers to stay comfortably when you’re not climbing.
  • Lunch, snacks, water.

  • This is a five-hour course
  • We do not supply climbing shoes.
  • The specific locations are spread across various areas in Western Massachusetts and will be emailed after registration.
